Life right now. #ohezraelias
Full hearts and tired eyes.
The transition to four kids has been somewhat challenging. There are just so many of them now 😆 and it can be overwhelming to be needed so constantly in so many different ways, trying to give each what they need. But he and I have come so far in the past year, in our connectedness and ability to function as a team. We’re tackling this new adventure as a united front, and because of that I know we’re going to be okay. More than okay. 💜

Sometimes the line between surviving and thriving is as simple as a conversation with a friend. A nice long hug. Ten minutes alone. A bit of sunlight, some fresh air. Every day, figure out something that you need and find a way to make it happen. Even in life’s most intense and challenging seasons, it can be simple and brief things like this that keep us afloat.
Homeschooling right now in this newborn season looks like: -Raising countless monarch caterpillars and observing their life cycle, recording and researching and journaling about it, and along the way discovering cool facts about milkweed and other self-seeding plants that use wind dispersal. -Lots of reading, mostly independent for the 9 year old. He’s currently into the Happy Hollisters series and anything related to survival and living off the land. Our local Living Learning Library is such an awesome resource! -Life of Fred math, also done independently. -Projects from the new @kiwico_inc boxes they just received. These subscriptions were birthday gifts for the boys and have led to all kinds of fun and self-led learning.

It’s been pretty cool to see what they naturally gravitate towards when I release the pressure of “doing school”. I assumed we’d be taking a break for at least a few weeks when the baby arrived, but it turns out that even when I’m not telling them to, they’re learning so much and basically continuing school all on their own. There are definitely certain lessons I want to get back to, but what I’ve been seeing is encouraging me to embrace more interest-led, project-based learning, especially for Seth who seems to thrive on these things.

{POSTPARTUM thoughts: Part IV}

In my little postpartum series here, I’ve talked about the importance of rest after giving birth.
Confession: it’s much more difficult to actually practice what I preach.
As soon as I felt strong enough, I found myself throwing in a load of laundry, putting things away, making a few meals, getting snacks for the big kids, spending hours out of the house some days for appointments and such—I even tacked a quick grocery trip on after one of them last week. And then each time I’ve overdone it, I hit a wall. The day after doing too much—especially when followed by a night of too little sleep—I feel physically, mentally and emotionally depleted. There are tears shed, physical pain, and I’m far less patient with my kids. It’s not good.
But, I’m trying to really pay attention to those signs, and scale back when (and preferably before) I get to that place. I do feel like I’ve been resting more intentionally this time than I did after my first three babies. But it’s SO hard to do. My midwife and I had a conversation yesterday about this, and how we tend to measure our self worth by our productivity. In the first few months with a new baby, when simultaneously healing from birth and providing constant care for a newborn, it can feel impossible to get anything else done. If we’re in that productivity mindset still, we will get super frustrated- even depressed. But right now, in this season- rest, bonding, healing, tending and feeding are exactly what we’re supposed to be accomplishing. And maybe this time has something teach, which I can carry into life long after the fourth trimester—that I don’t have to evaluate my days or my self by the things I’ve gotten done. Maybe the connections made, love and care given and received, life lived presently and deeply, are better units of measurement.

For two weeks now we’ve been learning each other, falling in love in that way that only happens with new babies. Two weeks of starting to figure out our new normal as a family of six.
It’s been a quick and crazy couple of weeks.
Here are a few of the newborn pictures I took of him waaay back when he was only three days old. ☺️
But really, why do babies make time feel so swift and cruel? I just want to slow it all down—this stage is so very sweet.
