Joy Luci - a birth story

Joy is truly the most perfect name for this precious girl whose entrance into the world was truly pure joy in every way. I was so blessed to be there to witness my dear friend give birth to her daughter in October 2016. Bianca is an amazing photographer herself, and so expertly photographed the birth of my own daughter a year before. Her maternity session a few months prior to this day is still one of my favorites ever.
Thank you, my dear, for being part of my family's story and allowing me to be part of yours!

baby bloom | a birth story

If I have learned anything through my experiences documenting birth stories, as well as my own births and time spent with midwives, doulas and other birth professionals, it that birth—every single birth—is so incredibly beautiful and powerful, and women—every single one of us—are so incredibly strong, stronger than we usually realize. This mama's strength and endurance left me in awe. I was with her for 14 hours of her labor, which was less than half of it, and she was still smiling in between contractions, and smiling as she held her brand new daughter when I visited the hospital the next day. It's an unspeakable honor to witness and document these moments.

jonah & aidan | birth story

When I first meet or speak with couples hoping for me to document their birth story, there usually are a lot of "what-ifs". And for practically every one of those, the answer is some version of: we'll just go with the flow, wait and see, and document whatever happens, however possible. Every single birth story is unique, and that is part of the reason I love doing this. Unpredictability is just part of the wonderful world of birth.

At full term carrying twin boys, Sarah's doctor made the decision to induce labor. As things seemed to be progressing I made my way to Boca Raton Regional Hospital, and after many hours of waiting it was finally time to wheel her to another room to deliver. At the last moment I was unexpectedly not allowed in the room during delivery, and waited with the grandparents to see the brand new babies. Sarah gave birth to two beautiful sons, Jonah and Aidan, who needed just a bit of help from the NICU. Once they were settled at home a few weeks later, I came by for a few more shots to complete the story.

ansley emer | a birth story

There are very few things as incredible as witnessing a birth. This is without a doubt my favorite thing to photograph—to document a human being entering this world leaves me speechless and in tears every single time. And this one is especially close to my heart because this is the birth of my best friend's youngest child. Sondra is my soul sister in motherhood; our families are growing up side by side. I was so grateful to be able to capture this amazing day for her as she met her sweet Ansley for the first time.

Now this little one is already 7 months old! (at least I'm getting these blogged before her first birthday, no?)

Calder Eric | A Birth Story

What can I possibly even say about this?To witness someone's entrance into this world is such an incredibly powerful thing. To document that for a family is one of the very coolest things about my job. I feel so very lucky to have been part of this. I choked back tears more than once while shooting this.

Calder arrived on January 30th, at The Palms Birth House in Delray Beach, FL. He was born peacefully in water, into the loving arms of his awesome parents, Sonia and Eric. Sonia seriously rocked her labor, and this sweet boy is healthy and very well-loved. The team of women who supported them during labor and delivery were seriously amazing. After my own two home births, I have so much love and respect for midwives and doulas, and watching them work from the perspective of not being the laboring mama was very cool indeed.

Welcome to the world, baby boy!
